About the DPA Campaign

The delivery drivers in NYC wearing Amazon vests, driving Amazon vans, and delivering Amazon packages don’t work for Amazon. At least, according to Amazon…

Our City Socialists in Office have partnered with Teamsters Local 804 to change this with the Delivery Protection Act. The bill would force Amazon to employ last mile delivery drivers directly, and implement extensive regulations to protect workers and New Yorkers from Amazon's exploitative practices.

NYC-DSA is standing with these essential workers. Join our canvasses to knock the doors of our neighbors so they get involved in the fight and apply pressure on their city councilors to stand up to Amazon.

At the start of the canvass our field leads will train attendees on how to use our call and letter tools so that interested constituents can make their voice heard and demand the city council pass the Delivery Protection Act!

The drivers that Amazon needs to deliver hundreds of millions of packages in NYC a year are technically "subcontractors." That means Amazon doesn't need to take any responsibility for the rampant pollution, unsafe streets, and exploitative working conditions that produce their record profits. And if workers organize to fight back, Amazon can cut ties with the shell company that employs them without any repercussions.

If this bill passes, NYC would become the first municipality in the country to require big corporations like Amazon to directly employ their Last Mile delivery workers instead of relying on shell “subcontractors” to evade responsibility. This would be a groundbreaking, historic change. And Amazon knows it. That's why they are spending millions of dollars to fight its passage, pressuring politicians and bribing workers to say nice things about working for them.

We won't let them win. Join the fight to bring Amazon to heel.

Write to NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin!

I am writing to you with an urgent request: stand up to Amazon and pass the Delivery Protection Act!

We urgently need regulations for last mile delivery in NYC. Each year, tens of millions of packages are delivered in our city. “Last Mile” facilities are usually packed into just a few neighborhoods, bringing pollution, traffic violence, and safety risks. They rely on underpaid, unsafe, unstable jobs subcontracted to fake “third parties” to evade accountability.

Last mile drivers and workers deserve to be protected from irresponsible and unsafe employment practices. New Yorkers deserve safe streets and neighborhoods. The Delivery Protection Act is the way to deliver.

Here’s what the bill would do:
- Require companies to directly employ their drivers, ending the shell “subcontractors” (also known, in Amazon’s case, as “Delivery Service Partners” or DSPs) who aren’t really independent.
- Make companies responsible for driver safety.
- Protect workers from unfair firing and retaliation when they speak up.
- Mandate real safety training through independent groups to make sure workers know their rights and how to stay safe.
- Require Last Mile delivery centers to have a license so the City can hold them accountable.

The status quo is unacceptable. “Last mile” warehouse and package delivery workers have the highest estimated rate of serious injury among private sector industries. On average, almost four in 100 full-time workers experienced serious injury in 2022. We need to protect these workers. And currently, when “Amazon” trucks cause traffic stoppages, crashes and damage to New York City’s streets, the question of who is responsible is muddied and Amazon is able to evade accountability.

Amazon and other big corporations must take responsibility for the dangers they pose to New Yorkers and adopt safe and fair labor practices. We must protect the health and safety of workers and everyday New Yorkers from the greed of big corporations who are endangering our streets to make a quick buck.

I urge you to stand up to Amazon and big corporations by passing the Delivery Protection Act.
